In a post on X on Tuesday eveningroyal circle club, Elon Musk said President Trump had asked his rocket company SpaceX to bring home “as soon as possible” two NASA astronauts who have been on the International Space Station since June.
SpaceX, in fact, is already scheduled to bring those two astronauts home, but no earlier than late March, along with two other astronauts who are currently on board.
Hours later, Mr. Trump in his own post on the website Truth Social,bw777 confirmed the request, stating that “Elon will soon be on his way,” without setting a time frame for a return trip.
On Wednesday afternoon, NASA said in a statement that it was working to safely return Ms. Williams and Mr. Wilmore “as soon as practical,” while also preparing for the mission to bring up the next group of astronauts.”
To avoid understaffing of the space station, NASA typically sends up the replacement crew before the current astronauts leave.
But the agency’s statement did not clarify the meaning of “as soon as practical" or promise that the return would be any sooner than the current schedule of late March.
